Parents’ Baby Dies While Hospitals Keep Changing His Diagnosis

Parents seem to have a sixth sense when something is wrong with their children. They’ll do anything to figure out what’s wrong.

When Nicole Thompson and Te Keepa Paraone noticed their seven-month-old son came down with a fever, a rash, and lacked movement on his right side, they immediately took him to Midland Hospital in Perth, Australia.

According to 9 News Perth, the staff at the hospital told Nicole and Te Keepa that their youngest son, Malaki, was simply teething and possibly suffering from a “pulled elbow.”

Nicole even admitted they were “laughed at” for being concerned for their child before the hospital sent them on their way.

The next day, Tuesday, Malaki started to vomit and his heart rate was up. This time, his parents called an ambulance and the little boy was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

Nicole and Te Keepa tell 9 News Perth that when Malaki arrived to the hospital, he was examined in a bathroom, on a changing table, because the hospital didn’t have any beds available. They were sent home again, this time with Panadol, better known as Tylenol.

On Wednesday, a general practitioner diagnosed Malaki with “a virus” and told the concerned parents that there was nothing he could do for the infant.

Unfortunately, Malaki’s health continued to decline and on Thursday, his persistent parents brought him back to PMH. This time the hospital didn’t send Malaki home. Instead, he was put into the intensive care unit (ICU).

While on life support, doctors told Nicole and Te Keepa that their son was suffering from a meningococcal virus. Nicole, Te Keepa, and their oldest son were prescribed antibiotics just in case.

However, when Malaki’s parents accused the doctors of turning them away earlier in the week, the doctors changed Malaki’s diagnosis. They said they believed the seven-month-old was actually suffering from septicemia, a common blood infection.

The following day, Malaki was taken off life support and passed away. His parents write that his death was in fact caused by the meningococcal virus.

Nicole shared her heartbreak, and her plan going forward, with 9 News Perth:

“I was hoping that when [life support] turned off that his heart would still be beating. My son was strong for four days. I’m going to be strong for him and get the justice he deserves.

Three days I tried to get him help. Three days, two hospitals, one doctor, an ambulance trip, had they done their jobs properly my son would still be here.”

The GoFundMe account was been set up in order to help the family with funeral expenses. They are still waiting for the hospital to return their son to them.

Nicole and Te Keepa vow to keep fighting for their son.

Trump is Ready to Give His Big Immigration Speech Tonight. But First, He’s Going South of the Border

Betcha didn’t see this coming.

While America prepares to hear Donald Trump’s big speech on immigration, his campaign announced a last-minute travel plan.

News leaked Tuesday that Trump is making a trip to Mexico, at the invitation of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Almost immediately, a member of the media had a snarky prediction for Trump:

But Nieto has also invited Hillary Clinton, according to the Washington Post. She has yet to respond.

According to WaPo:

[Mexican President] Peña Nieto later tweeted that he believes in dialogue in order to “promote the interests of Mexico in the world and, principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are.”

The visit comes after Trump has wavered for weeks on whether he will continue to hold his hard-line positions on the central and incendiary issue of his campaign, in particular his call to deport an estimated 11 million immigrants who are living in the United States illegally.

Americans are familiar with Trump’s tough rhetoric on immigration, but they’ve also been curious over recent weeks as Trump’s campaign has openly discussed pivoting on the issue.

This video of Trump polling an audience is a useful template for that pivot. Some people were refreshed by his candor and openness, with others disappointed he was waffling on a big issue:

Now with Trump set to make his position clear, the drama is even higher for his visit today south of the border.

The drama will be even higher when he opens up to America on exactly where he stands on this crucial issue.

The Singer Infamous for Beating Rihanna Just Got Arrested After Standoff with L.A.P.D.

Pop singer Chris Brown was arrested outside his Los Angeles home after a standoff with the L.A.P.D.

Reuters reported on the breaking news story:

Pop star Chris Brown was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on Tuesday after a daylong standoff and search at his Los Angeles home that began when a woman called 911, police said.

CBS News said the arrest came after a woman complained about Brown:

Los Angeles police detectives were searching the home of Brown on Tuesday after a woman said he pointed a gun at her.

Baylee Curran told The Los Angeles Times that she and a friend went to Brown’s house with a business associate Monday night.

The dispute appears to be about something really ludicrous:

She said she was admiring the diamond necklace of a man who had been showing off his jewelry when the man got angry and told her to back away.

That’s when she said Brown pulled out a gun, pointed it at her face and told her to get out.

Brown came out of his Los Angeles home peacefully Tuesday after an hours long standoff with police who responded to the woman’s call for help.

Brown took to social media before his arrest to protest his innocence.

“I don’t care. Y’all gonna stop playing with me like I’m the villain out here, like I’m going crazy,” Brown said in an Instagram video. “When you get the warrant or whatever you need to do you’re going to walk right up in here and you’re going to see nothing. You idiots.”

This wouldn’t be the first time the singer infamous for beating mega-star Rihanna was investigated by police. In January of 2016, Brown was investigated for punching a woman in the face, but was later cleared of all charges.

White House Defends Colin Kaepernick’s Right to Sit During the National Anthem, But Calls It “Objectionable”

Asked Monday during the White House press briefing if President Obama had an opinion about the decision of football player Colin Kaepernick to not stand during “The Star Spangled Banner,” spokesman Josh Earnest would only acknowledge the President had been paying attention to news reports:

“Given the president’s interest in the sports world, I’m confident that he is aware of this issue, but I have not spoken to him about it”.

However, Earnest did express his own personal opinion, one that clashed with the Kaepernick’s stance:

“I think in general, what I can say is, I certainly don’t share the views that Mr. Kaepernick expressed after the game in explaining his reasoning for his actions.”

Earnest went on to say that Kaepernick should be able to publicly tout his ideologies, even if they are considered by many to be offensive:

“But we surely all acknowledge and even defend his right to express those views in the settings that he chooses. Even as objectionable as we find his perspective, he certainly is entitled to express them.”

Prior to Friday night’s preseason San Francisco 49ers game, Kaepernick, the quarterback, remained seated during the National Anthem to protest what he feels is the unfair treatment of minorities in America. In a statement to reporters on Sunday, Kaepernick said of his controversial decision:

“People don’t realize what’s really going on in this country. There are a lot things that are going on that are unjust. People aren’t being held accountable for. And that’s something that needs to change. That’s something that this country stands for freedom, liberty and justice for all. And it’s not happening for all right now.”

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said today Kaepernick should move to another country.

San Francisco 49ers Are Reportedly ‘Likely’ to Cut Colin Kaepernick

A number of people on social media have called for the San Francisco 49ers to release quarterback Colin Kaepernick over his refusal to stand for the National Anthem last Friday – and his promise to continue sitting out the anthem as the season begins.

But according to Fox Sports analyst Jay Glazer, that may not be an issue much longer:

“Regardless of politics or not, he has a very, very big uphill battle to make this team. I’d be shocked if he’s on the 49ers by the time this season ends.

It has nothing to do with political views whatsoever. He lost a ton of weight this off-season, had three surgeries, couldn’t work out, lost that double threat, that size-speed ratio.

Nothing to do with political views, he just hasn’t been effective. He’s regressing as a player.

I’d be shocked if he’s on this roster by the end of this year. He may not be on it in the next two weeks.”

Kaepernick has an $11.9 million guaranteed salary for this season, which would normally keep the team from cutting him. However, if the 49ers release him in time for another team to sign him, that would be reduced by the amount of his new salary.

The trick, as several sources have noted, will be in finding another team willing to sign Kaepernick following the publicity firestorm surrounding his recent actions.

And according to The Big Lead’s Jason McIntyre, it may be a bit of a trick to convince the public that Kaepernick is being let go “for football reasons”: “They’ll say it was about football, nothing else. And nobody will believe them.”

Mexico’s President Calls Out Trump on Twitter: We Will Never Pay for the Wall

Donald Trump visited the President of Mexico on Wednesday, and though Donald Trump says they didn’t discuss who would pay for a potential border wall, President Enrique Peña Nieto recently called his bluff.

Throughout Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the GOP nominee has maintained that Mexico will pay for a border wall, which would cost an estimated $12-25 billion in investment before maintenance.

However, during a brief Q&A following remarks from both Trump and Peña Nieto Wednesday, Trump said that he didn’t bring up the hallmark campaign talking point during their discussion:

“We didn’t discuss payment for the wall.”

The subdued statement was unlike Trump’s usual rabble-rousing rallying behavior:

However, later that evening Peña Nieto tweeted out that he made it clear the two had spoken about the potential wall payment, saying this:

Translation: At the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made it clear that Mexico would not pay for the wall.

Peña Nieto has been critical of Trump’s immigration proposals since earlier this election cycle, when he said there was “no scenario” in which Mexico would pay for Trump’s proposed border wall.

Soon after, Trump fired back:

Then, yet again, Peña Nieto stated:

Translation: I repeat what I told you personally, Mr. Trump: Mexico will never pay for a wall.

Ouch.

Kentucky Congressman Ed Whitfield to Resign Next Week After Ethics Investigation

Representative Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) submitted his intent to resign from Congress next week, following a tumultuous investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

After being dogged by an ethics probe into “special favors” he provided to his wife, a lobbyist, Whitfield announced in a letter to Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin that he will vacate his House seat on Tuesday.

Whitfield wrote:

“It has been my honor and privilege to have represented the constituents of the First District of Kentucky in the United States Congress for the last almost 22 years.

As you know, I did not seek re-election to Congress this year and have now decided to submit my resignation as the Congressman of the First District of Kentucky, effective 6PM, Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

I have enjoyed serving with you and wish you and your Administration the very best! This the 29th day of August, 2016.”

The news of Whitfield’s resignation submission to Bevin was first reported by the Associated Press.

Bevin responded to the announced Wednesday evening on Twitter:

While Whitfield’s seat is set to be filled in the new Congress by either Democrat Sam Gaskins or businessman James Comer, a Republican, Bevin announced that a special election will take place on November 8th to temporarily fill the seat, coinciding with the general election.

Comer immediately responded to the news of Whitfield’s retirement and Bevin’s intention to hold a special election by issuing a statement, reading:

“I will seek the nomination for the unexpired term of Congressman Whitfield, and fully expect to be on the ballot twice on November 8, once for the unexpired term and once for the full two year term.”

Whitfield represented Kentucky’s first congressional district since 1995.

Medal of Honor Recipient Has Some Choice Words for Colin Kaepernick About the Meaning of ‘Sacrifice’

Colin Kaepernick is underwater in a sea of criticism about choosing to sit out the national anthem on Friday.

Among those who have given Kaepernick a piece of their minds are NFL playerspolitical commentatorsveterans, police officers, Cuban dissidents, and even his birth mom. Ouch.

One of the most popular arguments since Kaepernick’s stunt is that he doesn’t appreciate veterans. We talked to Medal of Honor recipient Florent Groberg about the controversy surrounding the quarterback’s opinion of veterans.

US President Barack Obama presents retired US Army Captain Florent A. Groberg with the Medal of Honor during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC, on November 12, 2015. Groberg, a native of France, who became a naturalized US citizen in 2001, received the medal for his actions on August 8, 2012 when he hurled himself at a suicide bomber in the Afghan city of Asadabad. He sustained serious injuries to his left leg while the blast killed 4 people. AFP PHOTO / JIM WATSON / AFP / JIM WATSON (Photo credit should read JIM WATSON/AFP/Getty Images)

For some background about the Retired Army Captain, Groberg spotted a suicide bomber approaching his security detail while serving in Afghanistan. When Groberg physically pushed the man away from his detail, the suicide bomber triggered his vest that set off another previously unknown suicide bomber.

Ret. Captain Groberg told us:

“The biggest thing about this is he has an American given right to do what he wants to do. No matter what he did, I would still fight for him or anyone who has the same mindset.

Because I fight for people in our country to have an opinion and a voice. It’s another of those cases that’s how do you really want to represent yourself and how do you promote yourself.

Do I agree with not saluting the flag? Absolutely not. The flag means everything to me. It represents the millions who died and the sacrifices they made.”

The Army vet explained how Kaepernick hasn’t sacrificed for his country and that he needed to consider more than just his worldview:

“He doesn’t know that because he’s never sacrificed. Then again, I haven’t lived in his shoes. He brought up the serious issue of police brutality. But what about police officers that have been targeted as well. It goes both ways.

Do I hate him for it? Absolutely not.

I lived a completely different life than this guy. I respect the fact that he is an American and has the right to make that stance.

This is America. Everybody has an issue. But there’s another serious issue with police being targeted. He’s going to get criticism for voicing his opinion. That’s what we get living in a country with freedom of speech.”

But Groberg wants to know if Kaepernick can back up his big talk:

“What he is doing to fix the issue? Now he’s out there and he’s going to sit the National Anthem out. He put himself on the front-line. I’m waiting to see what his actions are next to help fix the issue.

You want everyone to speak about it and use the national stage, that’s great. But now he’s the face of a movement that everyone is talking about. Is it just talking or he is going to walk the walk. I hope he walks the walk.

I vote that he takes the time to sit down with police officers too. Because there has been terrible incidents that happened by individuals, but there are so many incredible police officers out there. If we want to fix things, we have to work together.”

Groberg addressed the claim that Kaepernick hates veterans:

“What Kaepernick said affected the veteran community. He affected Gold Star families who live every day with knowing that they’ve lost their loved one.

But I don’t think it was Kaepernick’s intention to say he didn’t support the troops. And that’s what a lot of people are reporting.

A friend of mine, Nate Boyer, an ex-Green beret and guy who played with the pre-season was given a football by Kaepernick at a charity event that he signed. I know for a fact that he supports the troops.”

The war veteran summarized how he felt about the issues raised by the professional quarterback, and it comes from a man who put his life on the line to defend the nation whose anthem Kaepernick refused to stand for.

“Regardless of what he did, I’ll always stand by the flag and be there for America, it’s the greatest country in the world. And we fight for people to have the right to have the freedom to say what they want.”

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf Was the ‘Colin Kaepernick’ of 1996. Here’s What Happened to Him…

Twenty years before Colin Kaepernick chose to sit down during the National Anthem, upcoming NBA star Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf did the same thing.

Abdul-Rauf played point guard for the Denver Nuggets. He was born Chris Jackson but changed his name after converting to Islam in 1991.

Like Kaepernick, Abdul-Rauf had personal feelings about “The Star Spangled Banner.”

On March 10, 1996, Rauf, who was his team’s star player at the time, decided to do something controversial during the National Anthem. 5280.com gave a breakdown of what Abdul-Rauf did while the song played:

  • At the “twilight’s last gleaming,” he had his hands on his hips.
  • At the “perilous fight,” he was stretching.
  • When the words “gallantly streaming were heard,” Abdul-Rauf still stretched.
  • And he sat down right after everyone in the arena heard “our flag was still there.”

When Abdul-Rauf was asked why he did it, he responded:

“The flag is a symbol of oppression, of tyranny. This country has a long history of that. I don’t think you can argue the facts. You can’t be for God and for oppression.

It’s clear in the Koran, Islam is the only way. I don’t criticize those who stand, so don’t criticize me for sitting. I won’t waver from my decision.”

While the 49ers didn’t discipline Kaepernick for taking a similar stance to Abdul-Rauf, the ex-NBA player paid a big price for it.

They suspended him indefinitely for breaking the rule that said players have to “line up in a dignified posture” during the anthem. The suspension only lasted one day, but it cost Abdul-Rauf over $30,000.00.

Moving forward, the NBA made a compromise with Abdul-Rauf, where he still had to show “dignified posture” during the anthem but didn’t have to look at the American flag.

Abdul-Rauf was suspended for one-game after refusing to stand for the national anthem earlier in the week, but reached a compromise with the National Basketball Association. Another view:

Two years later, however, Abdul-Rauf wasn’t playing in the NBA anymore. Instead, he was playing ball in leagues in Greece, Russia, Italy and Japan.

And he believes it partially has to do with the controversy he created by not standing during the National Anthem.

In an interview with Hoopshype, Abdul-Rauf said:

“After the national anthem fiasco, nobody really wanted to touch me. Then there was the HBO interview with Bryant Gumbel. After that, it was like it killed everything. Because that was after September 11.

I could not even get an invitation to go try out with a team. I just laid low, stayed at home, spent more time with my family, trying to do things in the community and see if eventually I could get back into it.”

According to Abdul-Rauf, this wasn’t the first time he sat out the National Anthem. In fact, he said that he sat out most games of the 1996 season and waited in the locker room until the anthem finished. It wasn’t until a reporter saw what he was doing in March that the controversy was in the headlines.

Independent Journal Review reached out to Abdul-Rauf for comment on the Colin Kaepernick controversy, but hadn’t received word by the time of publication.

[Editor’s note: This article was corrected to accurately reflect that Abdul-Rauf’s flag protest took place 20 years ago.]

After Her Special Needs Son Came Home With Broken Thumbs, Review Revealed ‘More Than Heart Can Bear’

Breggett Rideau is a mother on a mission.

Rideau is understandably protective of her son, Terrance, who has special needs, so when she heard what had happened to him at the hands of a Texas teacher, she had no choice but to take action.

She tells Independent Journal Review that Terrance came home from Keller Middle School in 2008 with severe injuries:

“He came home with knot on [his] head, then he had two dislocated knees and then got a broken thumb, all from when he was at school.”

Rideau pulled her son out of the school and demanded an investigation into the matter.

A few years later, she says the investigation revealed more than her heart could bear.

Names had been left out of the court’s paperwork in an attempt to protect people’s rights and privacy.

But after hearing about the horrific findings, Rideau met one-on-one with the school’s attorney to reveal the names of the case — to her dismay, Terrance’s name came up a few times:

“That’s how I found out that my son was the one who was kicked across a classroom by his teacher, yelled at to ‘shut up’ and slammed against a wall.

What’s more disturbing is the man that hurt my son had been in our home, to his BIRTHDAY party. All of this had been reported by a teachers’ aide, but no one ever called me. That’s when I said, ‘I’m going to court and we’re getting cameras in these classrooms.’”

And so the legal battle began.

Rideau explains that she didn’t really know where to start. So she started by testifying in court about what had happened to her son, something she says was “painful” as she relived every time her son was abused.

She also wrote petitions and says she “harassed” lawmakers to create a law requiring special needs classrooms in Texas to have video cameras to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

The determined mom tells us that she’s a Democrat, but then-Senator Dan Patrick, a Republican, became her son’s knight in shining armor.

She explains:

“Texas has legislative sessions every two years. In 2013 I testified and Sen. Patrick wrote a camera bill. I had harassed Gov. Rick Perry, too. I put some musicians on a bus and two other families like mine, picketed in front of capital for this bill to become a law.

I was so hurt when the bill failed, but Mr. Patrick made me a promise. He’s a Republican and I’m a Democrat, but he promised me he’d get the bill passed and he kept his word. He saved my life and saved my family.”

It might have taken her seven years, but with the help of a New York lobbyist she hired, fundraising and even the use of her life savings, Rideau finally got what she had been fighting for last June, when Senate Bill 507 was signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott (R).

According to teachthevote.org, the new law requires of all Texas school districts:

Audio/video monitoring equipment in any self-contained classroom in which special education services are being provided to at least 50 percent of the students for at least 50 percent of the school day. The requirement is triggered in the event that a parent, school board member, or staff member on the campus requests that audio/video monitoring equipment be installed. The bill also requires school districts to store the audio and video recordings for not less than six months and to release the footage to persons specified by the bill.

Additionally, the bill specifies that districts may accept donations and grant money to fund the purchase of equipment and that the commissioner of education shall provide a grant program in the event that excess Foundation School Program funds are available from the state.

Image Credit: Briggett Rideau/Independent Journal Review

Today, Dan Patrick is the state’s Lieutenant Governor. Rideau says she wishes more politicians put the American people first like he did:

“That man has a good heart — I don’t know it because I heard it, I know it because I talked to him to his face and he made me a promise. And that promise, that’s decency right there.

Everyone came together to make this law possible — Republicans and Democrats worked together, that’s what America is all about. I’m so desperate for my country, but that’s the way it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to be people coming together for the common good.”

Though she just received a letter in the mail that her son’s school is putting cameras in classrooms this school year, she reflects back on the hard road it took to enact change.

Rideau recalls begging God to help her:

“I never prayed so much in my life. They’re [children] the most vulnerable citizens of the U.S. — they might not be able to vote in elections, but they have the right to be safe from harm at school. For the love of God.

That school let me fight all those years and they knew that man hurt my son. That’s heartbreaking.”

When asked how Terrance is doing, she said he still likes to smile, watch sports and loves to hug people. Since her son’s brain was damaged after what she calls a “bad vaccine” when he was 4 months old, he’s required more care than a typical kid.

But Terrance developed dystonia, which is “involuntary muscle contractions that cause repetitive or twisting movements,” as a result of the trauma he endured in the classroom, which forced Rideau to hire a full staff of nurses and caregivers.

Rideau’s strength and faith have gotten her through the toughest seven years of her life. She says the key to surviving anything life throws at you is having gumption and endurance — two things she clearly has in spades.
