Facebook LIVE cam from our local @BIGCATRESCUE Sanctuary

Posted by Big Cat Rescue on Wednesday, February 15, 2017

Find out more about the local mission of the BigCatRescue at some of their social media platforms.
The BigCATRescue website has a variety of updates on all varieties of large breed felines from all over the world. Since the sanctuary is in Tampa I think I will attempt to get the kids there one day. I’m pretty certain Lia and Kayla have a real love for cats. A family cat however, is nowhere on the same level as the cats you see in the above video feed.

I’m a huge fan of the live cam feeds. I could spend hours watching and listening for even the slightest roar of chuff. Do you also have a great love of large felines? I recently voted on the Valspar Championship site so they could get a nice chunk of the grant cash that is currently up for grabs from a variety of approved legal charities here in Tampa.

Give the rescue a mission a vote at if you have the time. Simply search for “BIGCATRESCUE” when you arrive there.

Veterans have a champion in U.S. House when it comes to employment

By Natalia Castro

The House of Representatives is putting veterans back to work across the country. The House has nearly unanimously passed legislation to assist veterans in returning to work through the Brave Act and the Hire Vets Act, both assisting veterans who returned from war to a struggling economy and disastrous social climate.

First, the Hire Vets Act introduces a medallion program which rewards employers that “recruit, employ, and retain veterans; and provide community and charitable services supporting the veteran community.”

Similarly, the Brave Act authorizes “the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in awarding a contract for the procurement of goods or services, to give preference to offerors based on the percentage of the offeror’s full-time employees who are veterans.”

The Brave Act passed unanimously in House and the Hire Vets Act passed with only one no vote, clearly veterans are the place where Democrats and Republicans can come together and now it is needed more than ever.

While veteran employment has been up in recent years, veterans still have an exceedingly difficult time finding jobs. Returning home from wars in the Middle East to a nation experiencing a dramatically slow economic recovery has caused more than half of all veterans to leave the labor force.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found in March 2016 that veterans with no disabilities only reach 51.2 percent labor force participation, leaving nearly half of all returning veterans to live without work. This strikes in at 11 percent below the national labor force participation rate, leaving those who fought for our country less likely to reenter society as productive members of our workforce than every day Americans.

Our veterans have been forced to enter the Obama economy. Despite claims that the recession ended in 2009, annual growth the past decade has been the weakest ever on record and has consistently underwhelmed or worried economists. Obama was simply unable to get Americans back to work, and thus, our veterans have been pushed out of the system.

Finally, the Brave Act and the Hire Vets Act provide an avenue for veterans to reenter the labor force and employers are incentivized to hire these American heroes.

While the bipartisan support has been heralded as a victory for the House, they are not done fighting for veterans’ well being. Reform to the veterans’ primary health care system, the Department of Veterans Affairs itself is also necessary but much less likely to get such bipartisan praise.

The Charleston Post and Courier explained that at the nomination for VA Secretary Dr. David Shulkin, “Senators at his nomination hearing expressed confidence that he can do the job, and welcomed his statement that he will seek ‘major reform’ at the troubled department with the help of new legislation from Congress.”

But while Senate Republicans might be willing to rally behind VA Reform, Democrats have consistently ignored the need for better health care for our veterans.

A lack of decent care for veterans only means more of the people who fought for our country being left outside an already struggling economy. Republicans in the House have begun remedying the problem, now the Senate must rally behind the same effort.

Proof: A Hardened Wall is Necessary on US Southern Border

CNN: Border Wall Breached 9,000 Times From 2010 to 2015

The fence along the U.S.-Mexico was breached over 9,200 times between 2010 and 2015, according to a report from The U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Special: New Executive Order: Big Changes for Retirees

The GAO released the report Thursday, citing U.S. Customs and Border Protection records, though it does not conclude that the fence is ineffective, just that the CBP has yet to accurately measure its effectiveness in closing illegal border crossing.

“As a result of CBP’s tactical infrastructure and technology investments between the ports of entry, the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) can detect and interdict illegal activity, monitor evolving threat patterns, and strategically deploy assets,” a CBP spokesman told CNN.

President Donald Trump campaigned on the promise for a border wall. CNN reports that Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly is expected to present a proposal for the wall to Trump, after weighing different options.

CNN sources in talks with DHS claim the agency will likely recommend additional fencing instead of a solid concrete structure across the entire length of the border.

One senior official with the U.S. Border Patrol said he wasn’t “calling it a wall because we are talking about a fence that we can look through. That’s what we need.”

Another said, “I think fencing has worked for us in the past, but you never want to have a barrier in place that will obstruct your vision, that prevents you from seeing the other side of the border.”

However, Trump has stated that he will build a wall “made of hardened concrete . . . rebar, and steel,” at a rally in December last year, and said “it’s not a fence. It’s a wall,” at a news conference last month, according to CNN.

President Trump will possibly the last leadeer of the United States to make good on keeping us Americans safe from barbarian hordes. Hordes of illegal aliens have infested the United States for decades so making a permanent non-porous structur with accompanying human guards would be a win for America. God bless the president and these United States

Yoga Can Be Helpful for Lower Back Pain Sufferers

lower back pain and yoga can work together

Lower back pain and me go back a long time since 1988. At the time, I suffered a compression fracture of several vertebrae in my lower lumbar region. Needless to say the road to recovery while a soldier was less than ideal. However, I was given the opportunity to complete my military career and not put out of the service under a “medical discharge”.

After spending a short 19 day stint in the local Tampa Veteran’s Affairs hospital the focus on chronic pain and exercise was emphasized. Some of the techniques that I learned during my chronic pain rehabilitation were a bit holistic in nature.

Adaptive yoga was an activity that we veterans engaged in to loosen up and get in tune with the pain receptors of our bodies. Coming from the hospital several days ago allowed my email inbox to be inundated with yoga for lower back and different studies like the one from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in quotes below. Follow the link at the end of the block quote to get the details on how yoga can be a tool to use to alleviate certain levels of lower back pain.

About 80 percent of Americans will suffer from back pain at one time or another. A recent study found that more than a third of adults say that low back pain has affected their ability to perform the tasks of daily living, exercise, or sleep. Treating this pain, which is a common complaint for lower-limb amputees and is chronic for millions of people, remains a difficult problem.

Now, a study by scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM) has concluded that yoga may be helpful for low back pain. The study appeared in the online journal Cochrane Library.

“We found that the practice of yoga was linked to pain relief and improvement in function,” said the study’s lead author, L. Susan Wieland, PhD, MPH.. “For some patients suffering from chronic non-specific low back pain, yoga may be worth considering as a form of treatment.”

Wieland and her co-authors reviewed 12 separate studies. The trials, which included more than 1,000 participants, compared yoga to a non-exercise intervention, such as educational material given to a patient, or to an exercise intervention, such as physical therapy. The researchers found that there was low to moderate certainty evidence that at three and six months, patients using yoga had small to moderate improvements in back-related function, as well as small improvements in pain.

Yoga performed about the same as non-yoga exercise in terms of improving back function at three and six months, although the researchers found few studies comparing yoga to other exercise and therefore considered the evidence to be very low certainty.

Yoga is a physical and spiritual practice that originated more than 2,000 years ago in India. Over the past several decades, it has become increasingly popular in the United States and other Western countries. It typically involves a combination of physical movements, controlled breathing, and relaxation or meditation.

Most of the trials used Iyengar, Hatha, or Viniyoga forms of the practice. Because all study participants knew whether or not they were practicing yoga, and their reporting of changes in pain and functioning could have been affected by this knowledge, the study outcomes could only be graded with moderate certainty at best. The study also found that patients using yoga had more adverse effects than patients who did not use exercise, but had similar rates of adverse effects as patients who used non-yoga exercise. The adverse effects were mostly increases in back pain. Yoga was not associated with serious side effects.

Disney finally drops Youtuber for anti-semitic rants

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that popular YouTube personality PewDiePie (Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg) has been dropped by Disney after stirring up controversy with anti-semitic video content. The Journal says that Disney told the publication it was cutting ties with him after reporters reached out to the company to inquire about the YouTuber’s use of Nazi imagery in recent videos.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Disney found the content in the videos to be “inappropriate” and that’s why the company is severing ties with him. The report cites several incidents and includes footage of the anti-semitic content, including a video from January 11 where Kjellberg watches two men hold a sign up that says “Death To All Jews.” He later created a video defending himself, claiming that media was mischaracterizing him.

The publication notes that YouTube has declined to comment on Kjellberg’s comments. Maker Studios, the video distributor for Kjellberg’s content, was purchased by Disney back in 2014.

You can watch the full report here.

Seems like brands are finally coming around to taking anti-Semitic tweets and jokes for real. I’m not a fan of Disney or the foul mouthed YouTube’s mentioned in the article.

He got just what he deserves. Now maybe Disney will start cleaning up it’s lineup of alternative lifestyle laden shows as well.

Do you have any commentary on the Disney firing mentioned above? Comment below.
