Facebook Instant Articles Can Help with Site Monetization too

Using Facebook for other than sharing content can help in other ways. Currently there is an unseen code embedded among this site. A code that is invisible to the site reader can be shared and trigger whether an ad to be spawned to a mobile or desktop user of the site.

You can of course see the native ads in the form of taboolas sponsored picture links. Clicking those will also take the reader to a weird but off the wall post. For the mobile user, the invisible Facebook code will show a unique ad. The below email explains some background to its current iteration. Read more below to find out if this something you may be interested in including on your own website properties.

Over the course of this year, we’ve seen strong growth in Instant Articles and we’re excited about the progress we’ve made to make the program a valuable part of publishers’ businesses. We’ve listened to partner feedback to evolve our product and policies to improve value for publishers, resulting in a number of updates over the past year.

Our goal is to support a full range of publisher business models – whether that focusing on advertising, branded content, or subscriptions. Here’s a recap of changes we’ve made to help publishers generate…

  • Automatic Ads Placement: We’ve made numerous changes this year to our Automatic Ads Placement feature to support more ad slots per page and higher yield. A great reading experience includes a great ads experience, and we look carefully at all ads-related product changes to make sure they do not negatively impact engagement metrics.
    • In November, we shipped a change that moves the first ad slot higher on the page and changes the way ads are placed at the bottom of the article. These changes had a net impact more ad slots per article on average — this effect was more pronounced for short articles (<300 words). This change applies to all publishers who use the automatic ads placement feature.
  • Direct sold campaigns: Publishers can seamlessly extend direct sold campaigns into Instant Articles using their existing ad server implementation, and keep 100% of the revenue.
    • Over the past year, we’ve introduced support for video, animated ads and a broader range of ad sizes, including custom units up to 2:3 aspect ratio.
    • As of October, Instant Articles supports multi-size units. The ad slot will resize around the ad based on the response from the publisher’s ad server. Read more here.
  • Audience Network: Publishers can tap into demand from 4 million advertisers on Facebook, accessing high-value native ad formats and people-based targeting for relevant, engaging ads.
    • Over the past year, we’ve added new formats and objectives like video and carousel ads to drive more value for advertisers and publishers. We’ve also redesigned the Audience Network units so they fit more seamlessly in the Instant Articles experience
    • Going forward, we’ll continue to work towards building out more formats and objectives that perform well in the Facebook News Feed.
  • Branded Content: Publishers can extend their branded content business to Instant Articles.
    • We’ve built support for branded content in Instant Articles to enable publishers to meet brand guidelines and sponsorship obligations, while giving readers the same great, engaging experience for both branded and editorial content.
    • We recently updated the article style editor so that publishers can visually distinguish their branded content from their editorial content. Read more here.
  • Native call-to-action in-line units: We’ve been testing CTAs to help publishers who monetize via subscriptions build relationships with new readers and drive acquisition down the subscriber funnel.
    • We’re currently testing CTA’s for email sign ups and Page likes. We’ve seen encouraging results so far, and we’re working hard to roll this feature out to all publishers in the near future.

Additionally, we’ve made recent updates that help the discovery of Instant Articles:

  • Link Covers: We’ve been experimenting with the look and feel of link cover attachments in News Feed, and plan to continue that work into 2017.
  • Recirculation: We’re excited to roll out horizontal scrolling in Instant Articles and we’re working on a number of other improvements in this area. Read more here.

Going into next year, we’ll continue listening to publisher feedback and iterating on our policies and products to help publishers generate more value from Instant Articles. Over the next few months, we’re particularly excited about experimenting with new native ad formats, continued expansion of the CTA program, and more work on recirculation.

If you are interested in joining the Instant Articles program, you can learn more here.

Some of Netflix is now available offline

qtq80-FjIb1B
Commuters rejoice! Netflix has added the option to download content to your phone or tablet. The option is available for Netflix’s own shows — Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, The Crown, Narcos, and others — as well as select movies and TV shows, with the company adding that it will offer more titles for offline viewing in due course of time.

Once downloaded, you’ll be able to avoid using your data to play shows while using public transit, and also able to watch your favorite Netflix shows or movies when you’re outside your carrier’s coverage area and away from Wi-Fi.

The Netflix app now offers an “Available for Download” section that lists all the titles available for offline viewing. You’ll be able to download videos in either Standard or Higher quality, and all downloaded content will be accessible from the “My Downloads” section.

Before Melania moves to the swamp her wishes must be followed

As a hands-on parent who took her role as a mother seriously, soon-to-be first lady Melania Trump reportedly demanded that her son Barron first finish school before she and he relocated to the White House.

“Melania is extremely close to Barron, and they have become closer during the campaign,” a source within President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team told the New York Post. “The campaign has been difficult for Barron, and she is really hoping to keep disruption to a minimum.”

The plan reportedly was for the 46-year-old wife and her 10-year-old son to remain together at the Trump Tower penthouse in New York City until the end of this school year, if not longer.

“She is really devoted to Barron,” the source added, noting that Melania preferred to provide first-hand parenting versus hiring nannies to raise her son — or any other children she might have, presumably — for her.

Rather than praise the incoming first lady for her dedication to quality parenting, however, liberals reportedly chose to lash out at her for wasting taxpayer money. Their ire lay with the costs associated with Melania and Barron remaining at Trump Tower.

“The Secret Service is going to have to keep that whole area cordoned off so that some wacko can’t get close and detonate a car bomb,” a security expert explained to the Post.

The argument could have been made that these were worthwhile expenses, but not everyone agreed.

facebook-comment

“Who is paying for the extra security costs?” complained one naysayer on the New York Post’s Facebook page. “That would be you, the hard pressed American tax payer, yet you were promised smaller, less expensive government. Trump lied.”

So did Obama.

According to Judicial Watch, President Barack Obama’s family spent at least $70.5 million during his first seven years in office on “personal or largely personal travel.” Just first lady Michelle Obama’s family trip five years ago to South Africa alone cost $424,000, as reported by U.S. News & World Report.

Here’s the difference: Whereas the Obamas regularly flushed money down the toilet to embark on extravagant vacations, the Trumps simply wanted to raise their children well — the idea of which was apparently too much for the average liberal dingbat to understand.

Imagine the pain that Hillary must be feeling right now after spending 35 years trying to get into the white house,. Now her dreams are lost forever. But it’s not just that. With Donald Trump’s promise to lock her up once he becomes president, her freedom could also be lost forever too.

Here’s the Tricky Grammar Rule You Use Every Single Day But Probably Never Thought About

There are some of English grammar rules that all native English speakers know—but don’t realize they know.

Confused?

Fear not, because Twitter user Matthew Anderson, editor of BBC Culture, posted an excerpt from a book this week showing off one of these secret rules.

Apparently, every native speaker sticks to it without even being aware of it:

It’s a rule for the order of adjectives in a sentence.

The proper order for adjectives is: opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose, noun.

And if you get the order wrong, you’re likely to sound a little nuts.

The excerpt reads:

“…you can have a lovely little old rectangular green French silver whittling knife. But if you mess with that word order in the slightest you’ll sound like a maniac.”

But if you were to write “A rectangular little French whittling silver green old lovely knife,” it sends the mind of the reader reeling.

This weird fact received over 42k retweets and 61k likes on Twitter, so people were dying to know where the excerpt came from.

As it happens, it’s from a book called “The Elements of Eloquence: How to Turn the Perfect English Phrase,” written by British author Mark Forsyth and published in 2013.

So the next time you hear someone talk about their “square Spanish used clay purple big clock,” go ahead and mail them a copy of Forsyth’s book.

They didn’t get the memo.

People are Having a Field Day on Social Media With Pic of Ivanka Trump and Her Brothers

A serious looking photo of the oldest Trump kids started a bit of an internet firestorm over the long Labor Day weekend.

Donald Trump, Jr. posted a political appeal to Millennials by him and siblings, Eric and Ivanka:

But not even the photogenic and well-turned-out children of the Republican presidential nominee could escape the shade thrown by people in a social media meltdown over the image.

The Washington Post reports that it all started when a reporter began mocking the photo:

“It started with a couple of jokes from journalists and others noting a somewhat sinister quality in the photo.”

What WaPo didn’t say was that it was one of its own reporters:

A reporter for the reliably lefty Salon followed suit with a crack about the Church of Scientology:

And then it was on.

Their serious look captured the attention of writer, actor and The Daily Show contributor, John Hodgeman, who likened the Trumps to predators eyeing their food:

The Trump kids went quickly from being their telegenic and camera-ready selves to people in a horror film.

Comedian Pat Tobin likened the Trump trio to a trio of horror movies:

Movie reviewer Adam Frazier decided the Trumps reminded him of another movie, “The Purge”:

The horror movie suggestions didn’t end there. Yikes!

Then came the “Children of the Corn” references:

Wait, they’re not done yet:

The TV critic for The New Yorker switched up the #ChildrenoftheCorn hashtag:

Movie maker Darryl Bartley had an idea for how to re-brand the photo:

Comedian, producer and entertainer, Judd Apatow, had to chime in:

They were likened to a coven of witches:

And they became the object of this woman’s envy-fantasy:

Was the original Trump Instagram post a bust after the media and entertainers lampooned it? So far, the post has nearly 18 thousand likes for Don Jr.

21-Year-Old Man Arrested for Playing Pokemon Go in Church

Vladimir Putin doesn’t play around–at least when it comes to Pokemon Go.

Following a ban of the immensely popular video game in Russian churches, the Kremlin has engaged in an extreme crackdown on virtual character catching on holy ground.

In protest, a 21-year-old blogger named Ruslan Sokolovsky created a video on August 11th showing him playing the game on his smartphone in a Russian Orthodoz Church.

A popular blogger with over 300,000 subscribers, it didn’t take long for the paranoid Russian police to come after Sokolovsky.

The Youtube video in Russian with subtitles, can be viewed below:

“… Who can ever be offended by you walking around a church with your smartphone,” the subtitles read. “I think this is safe and is not prohibited by law.”

As ABC News reported, Sokolovsky’s mission to catch a Pokemon in a church was successful, although his bid to defy the Kremlin may not be so much:

In the video, Sokolovsky stands across the street from the church, which he calls one of the “biggest temples in Yekaterinburg, ‘Temple on Blood.’” Once inside, Sokolovsky manages to catch a Pokemon as a member of the church, dressed in robes, stands in the background. At the end, he assesses that his mission went “well” and that he caught “several” Pokemon in the church.

The hashtag #FreeSokolovsky has been launched to pressure Putin into releasing the young man for the harmless fun. The band Pussy Riot has taken up the cause:

Free speech compatriots have taken up smartphones and are chasing Pokemon Go critters in his name at Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg, according to The Guardian.

ABC reports that Sokolovsky was charged with incitement of hatred and offending religious sensibilities. He faces up to five years and a fine of 500,000 rubles or about $15,000.

After Town Combs Woods for Lost Boy, Mom’s Thanking 3 Teens Who Broke Off from Group for His Return

Police were notified on Friday that 2-year-old Logan Kline had gone missing from his home while his father had been sleeping that afternoon. Police and volunteers searched the area surrounding the boy’s home all night, but couldn’t find any trace of him.

Near dawn on Saturday, searchers organized again in hopes the boy would be found:

About 90 minutes into the search, three teens, Taylor Calendar, Jeffrey Harmon, and Fernando Ipinn, broke away from the main group and continued searching for Logan on their own, calling out his name.

Then, suddenly, they got a response. They continued to move closer to the child’s voice and ended up finding him at around 9:00 a.m., approximately 1,400 feet away from his home, according to 11 Alive.

Harmon told Fox 5 what happened:

“I heard a faint cry. I heard a little noise and had a feeling and kept pushing forward and we kept going to find him.”

WSB-TV reports that Calendar put his own shirt on the boy when they found him.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office shared on Facebook that, after discovering Logan, the teens immediately called 911, and “a cooperative effort between on duty communications officers at the 911 center and communications officers deployed to handle field communications resulted in successful recovery and location of recovery team via GPS addressing of the cellular device.”

The emotional moment when Logan reunited with his mother was captured on video:

Logan was taken to Egleston Hospital for evaluation…

…and relieved searchers celebrated their joy at his safe recovery by applauding and cheering as the ambulance with Logan inside pulled away:

WSB-TV reports that Logan had suffered scratches, bug bites, and dehydration but is otherwise fine.

Hillary Staffers Blamed the ‘Mailman’ for Losing Laptop With Her Personal Email Archives

More bad news has surfaced related to the Hillary Clinton email scandal.

On the heels of other news such as at least 160 emails still being missing, FBI director James Comey busting lies told about the scandal, Hillary stating she did not know the little “(c)” on the emails meant “classified” and the fresh release by the FBI of their notes regarding their investigation of her private server, now there’s even more.

Breitbart reports that multiple devices used in connection with the scandal are unaccounted for. According to the report, a laptop and thumb drive used to archive Clinton’s emails have not been turned over to the FBI and “either the ‘United States Postal Service or United Parcel Service’” is being blamed. Breitbart writes:

FBI documentation then states, “[redacted] told the FBI that she never received the laptop from [redacted] however, she advised that Clinton’s staff was moving offices at the time, and it would have been easy for the package to get lost during the transition period. Neither Hanley nor [redacted] could identify the current whereabouts of the Archive Laptop or thumb drive containing the archive, and the FBI does not have either item in its possession.”

The contents of the laptop were reportedly saved to a “personal Google e-mail (Gmail) address” and “then downloaded to the mailbox ‘MRC Archive’ on the PRN server” prior to the laptop’s disappearance.

In addition to the laptop and thumb drive, 13 mobile devices the FBI requested for investigation have been deemed missing and two of five iPads all determined to be relevant to the investigation were not turned over to the FBI.

Nine-Year-Old Waits 30 Minutes in Pouring Rain to Salute WWII Veteran’s Funeral Procession

Joe O’Keefe says his father, Jerry, was a “larger than life figure.”

Jerry enlisted as a Marine fighter pilot a few months after Pearl Harbor, and traveled across the Pacific to the Okinawa theater. During his first experience with hostile fighting, he shot down five planes in one day, becoming one of the youngest fighter aces in WWII. A week later, he shot down two more.

When the war ended, Jerry returned to Mississippi, and he and his wife grew their family to fifteen.

Jerry went on to take office in the state legislature, where — despite being a John F. Kennedy Democrat in 1960’s Mississippi — he was voted the most outstanding lawmaker in his freshman class.

In 1973, he was elected mayor. During his two terms, Jerry took a stand against the Ku Klux Klan, at one time singlehandedly rescinding the group’s parade permit and throwing them in jail when they still attempted to march.

The KKK called the O’Keefe home in the middle of the night to say that they were coming to kill Jerry. His response? “I will be here ready and waiting.”

To Joe, Jerry had “hero status”:

“He was a towering figure in terms of his courage, willingness to answer call of duty, the length and quality of his public service, and the example that he set and the values that he gave to us.”

When he passed away, Joe and his twelve siblings began reflecting on how to honor such a extraordinary man:

“We did our best as a family in terms of the formality and the majesty of the service. There was a flyover of planes, we had his casket on a horse-drawn carriage, we celebrated at a high mass in the cathedral, we did everything we could.”

As they made their way in the funeral procession from the church to the cemetery, the O’Keefes were moved by various organizations who came out to show their support for Jerry.

Then they saw Kaiden Wade.

Joe describes the scene:

“We came around the corner and saw Kaiden standing there all by himself. No adults around. No friends around. In the rain with his hand over his heart. Stock-still as a measure of honor and respect for our father.”

Joe tells Independent Journal Review that it was an “a-ha” moment for him and his family. They were of no relation to Kaiden, yet there he was standing outside in the pouring rain for over thirty minutes, just to pay his respects to their larger-than-life father.

It reminded Joe that because of his public service, his father had touched the lives of so many individuals, some of whom, like Kaiden, he had never even met.

Joe says that Kaiden’s actions were symbolic to the loneliness of staying true to ones morals:

“Kaiden standing in the rain reminded us of how often dad had taken his very unpopular stances and stood alone in the rain, so to speak, for something he believed in.”

It gave his family a sense of resolve; their father had been working for the next generation, just as he had wanted.

Kaiden’s presence that day was exactly what they needed as they said goodbye to their hero.

“What Kaiden did was so basic, pure, and aspirational,” Joe says. “It did a lot to help us heal.”

The FDA Says Antibacterial Soaps Don’t Kill Germs and Might Actually Be Harmful, Bans 19 Ingredients

Those antibacterial soaps that tend to fly off the shelves in grocery stores and pharmacies? They might not be around much longer.

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Friday that it has banned more than a dozen chemicals used in antibacterial soaps on the grounds that manufacturers haven’t shown that they actually kill germs — or that they’re even safe to use.

Screen Shot 2016-09-03 at 4.54.07 PM

That may mean that antibacterial soaps aren’t any more effective than regular soap — and that, in fact, they may be harmful.

The ruling means that products with 19 different antibacterial ingredients — the most popular of which are triclosan and triclocarban — must be reformulated or removed from stores within a year.

In a Friday morning news conference, Theresa Michele of the FDA’s Division of Non-prescription Drug Products told press:

“Manufacturers did not demonstrate that they are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections.”

Michele also noted that about 40% of the soaps on the commercial market contain one or more of the 19 banned ingredients. That’s more than 2,100 products.

Michele explained how cleaners with the 19 ingredients could actually increase bacterial resistance and make it harder to fight illness, and those ingredients may also cause hormonal changes. She added that the FDA had given manufacturers plenty of time to prove the effectiveness of the products.

Contradicting the FDA’s allegations, the American Cleaning Institute released a statement on Friday that claimed antibacterial hand soaps are safe and more effective than their regular counterparts:

The FDA has not yet responded to the ACI’s statement.
