A serious looking photo of the oldest Trump kids started a bit of an internet firestorm over the long Labor Day weekend.
Donald Trump, Jr. posted a political appeal to Millennials by him and siblings, Eric and Ivanka:
But not even the photogenic and well-turned-out children of the Republican presidential nominee could escape the shade thrown by people in a social media meltdown over the image.
The Washington Post reports that it all started when a reporter began mocking the photo:
“It started with a couple of jokes from journalists and others noting a somewhat sinister quality in the photo.”
What WaPo didn’t say was that it was one of its own reporters:
America, your choice is between:
1) A taco truck on every corner; or
2) Four years of looking at these people. http://pic.twitter.com/BNSTeU7fNX— Daniel Drezner (@dandrezner) September 3, 2016
A reporter for the reliably lefty Salon followed suit with a crack about the Church of Scientology:
feel like I’m about to be offered a free personality test http://pic.twitter.com/27xSsa3FzN

And then it was on.

Their serious look captured the attention of writer, actor and The Daily Show contributor, John Hodgeman, who likened the Trumps to predators eyeing their food:
Millennials = really into being kidnapped by creepy banker guys and their sister and then being stared at like food http://pic.twitter.com/0zHckRqSdB

The Trump kids went quickly from being their telegenic and camera-ready selves to people in a horror film.
Comedian Pat Tobin likened the Trump trio to a trio of horror movies:
This picture of the Trump kids looks like the VHS cover of a late 90s teen horror movie. http://pic.twitter.com/Q6DYoOC1PR

Movie reviewer Adam Frazier decided the Trumps reminded him of another movie, “The Purge”:
Just remember all the good the purge does. #MillennialsForTrump #StudentsForTrump #PurgersForTrump http://pic.twitter.com/VjDmd1MS1v
— Adam Frazier (@AdamFrazier) September 3, 2016
The horror movie suggestions didn’t end there. Yikes!

Then came the “Children of the Corn” references:

Wait, they’re not done yet:
This movie is just getting scarier and scarier… #TrumpInDetroit #ChildrenOfTheCorn http://pic.twitter.com/ZIMaMZUpWb

The TV critic for The New Yorker switched up the #ChildrenoftheCorn hashtag:
Children of the Con. http://pic.twitter.com/J09iDDi4Ut

Movie maker Darryl Bartley had an idea for how to re-brand the photo:
I really feel like the show has gotten way too dark this season http://pic.twitter.com/4qe7qfoG6Q
— Daryl Bartley (@hypercubexl) September 3, 2016
Comedian, producer and entertainer, Judd Apatow, had to chime in:
How is Trump an outsider? Billionaires are outsiders? Is this a Menendez brothers biopic poster? http://bit.ly/2cl4VXn
— Judd Apatow (@JuddApatow) September 3, 2016
They were likened to a coven of witches:
What you summon when you say “Make America Great Again” three times in front of a mirror http://pic.twitter.com/RfQDX5jxg5
— James Poniewozik (@poniewozik) September 3, 2016
And they became the object of this woman’s envy-fantasy:

Was the original Trump Instagram post a bust after the media and entertainers lampooned it? So far, the post has nearly 18 thousand likes for Don Jr.
