Nine-Year-Old Waits 30 Minutes in Pouring Rain to Salute WWII Veteran’s Funeral Procession

Joe O’Keefe says his father, Jerry, was a “larger than life figure.”

Jerry enlisted as a Marine fighter pilot a few months after Pearl Harbor, and traveled across the Pacific to the Okinawa theater. During his first experience with hostile fighting, he shot down five planes in one day, becoming one of the youngest fighter aces in WWII. A week later, he shot down two more.

When the war ended, Jerry returned to Mississippi, and he and his wife grew their family to fifteen.

Jerry went on to take office in the state legislature, where — despite being a John F. Kennedy Democrat in 1960’s Mississippi — he was voted the most outstanding lawmaker in his freshman class.

In 1973, he was elected mayor. During his two terms, Jerry took a stand against the Ku Klux Klan, at one time singlehandedly rescinding the group’s parade permit and throwing them in jail when they still attempted to march.

The KKK called the O’Keefe home in the middle of the night to say that they were coming to kill Jerry. His response? “I will be here ready and waiting.”

To Joe, Jerry had “hero status”:

“He was a towering figure in terms of his courage, willingness to answer call of duty, the length and quality of his public service, and the example that he set and the values that he gave to us.”

When he passed away, Joe and his twelve siblings began reflecting on how to honor such a extraordinary man:

“We did our best as a family in terms of the formality and the majesty of the service. There was a flyover of planes, we had his casket on a horse-drawn carriage, we celebrated at a high mass in the cathedral, we did everything we could.”

As they made their way in the funeral procession from the church to the cemetery, the O’Keefes were moved by various organizations who came out to show their support for Jerry.

Then they saw Kaiden Wade.

Joe describes the scene:

“We came around the corner and saw Kaiden standing there all by himself. No adults around. No friends around. In the rain with his hand over his heart. Stock-still as a measure of honor and respect for our father.”

Joe tells Independent Journal Review that it was an “a-ha” moment for him and his family. They were of no relation to Kaiden, yet there he was standing outside in the pouring rain for over thirty minutes, just to pay his respects to their larger-than-life father.

It reminded Joe that because of his public service, his father had touched the lives of so many individuals, some of whom, like Kaiden, he had never even met.

Joe says that Kaiden’s actions were symbolic to the loneliness of staying true to ones morals:

“Kaiden standing in the rain reminded us of how often dad had taken his very unpopular stances and stood alone in the rain, so to speak, for something he believed in.”

It gave his family a sense of resolve; their father had been working for the next generation, just as he had wanted.

Kaiden’s presence that day was exactly what they needed as they said goodbye to their hero.

“What Kaiden did was so basic, pure, and aspirational,” Joe says. “It did a lot to help us heal.”

The FDA Says Antibacterial Soaps Don’t Kill Germs and Might Actually Be Harmful, Bans 19 Ingredients

Those antibacterial soaps that tend to fly off the shelves in grocery stores and pharmacies? They might not be around much longer.

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Friday that it has banned more than a dozen chemicals used in antibacterial soaps on the grounds that manufacturers haven’t shown that they actually kill germs — or that they’re even safe to use.

That may mean that antibacterial soaps aren’t any more effective than regular soap — and that, in fact, they may be harmful.

The ruling means that products with 19 different antibacterial ingredients — the most popular of which are triclosan and triclocarban — must be reformulated or removed from stores within a year.

In a Friday morning news conference, Theresa Michele of the FDA’s Division of Non-prescription Drug Products told press:

“Manufacturers did not demonstrate that they are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections.”

Michele also noted that about 40% of the soaps on the commercial market contain one or more of the 19 banned ingredients. That’s more than 2,100 products.

Michele explained how cleaners with the 19 ingredients could actually increase bacterial resistance and make it harder to fight illness, and those ingredients may also cause hormonal changes. She added that the FDA had given manufacturers plenty of time to prove the effectiveness of the products.

The FDA has been concerned with the safety of triclosan and other antibacterial ingredients since 2005, particularly the effects that long-term exposure to the ingredients may have. The Environmental Protection Agency is also in the process of reviewing the ingredients in question.

Contradicting the FDA’s allegations, the American Cleaning Institute released a statement on Friday that claimed antibacterial hand soaps are safe and more effective than their regular counterparts:

“Antibacterial soaps are critical to public health because of the importance hand hygiene plays in the prevention of infection. Washing the hands with an antiseptic soap can help reduce the risk of infection beyond that provided by washing with non-antibacterial soap and water.”

The FDA has not yet responded to the ACI’s statement.

How One Green Beret’s Meeting With Kaepernick Led QB to Get Off Bench & Take a Knee for Nat’l Anthem

At the Chargers vs. 49ers pre-season game Thursday, Colin Kaepernick chose not to stand during the national anthem for the second time.

And once again, the image of Kaepernick not standing went viral:

However, this time, Kaepernick didn’t sit out on the bench away from his team; he took a knee. And part of the reason why has to do with the man on Kaepernick’s left, Green Beret veteran Nate Boyer, who played the 2015 pre-season with the Seattle Seahawks.

A few days before Boyer found himself on the sidelines next to Kaepernick as his guest, he wrote an open letter to the quarterback.

In the open letter, Boyer made it clear that he “isn’t judging” Kaepernick for his choice, that he would have been “hurt” to see his teammates not stand, and that he looks forward to the day the young quarterback is “inspired once again” to stand during the anthem.

Kaepernick saw the letter and chose to reach out.

In fact, he invited Boyer to come to San Diego before the game.

Boyer told Independent Journal Review about their meeting and the way he was welcomed by Kaepernick.

“He sent a car to drive me down. And before our meeting started, the very first thing he did was thank me for my service. In our hour and a half meeting, we talked about everything. I told him how his choice to not stand has affected the veteran community. But I also took the time to listen to him.

I suggested that maybe there’s a way to find some middle ground so what he did doesn’t seem so offensive to veterans. To help paint a clearer picture, I showed him some of the texts some people sent me about how they were really upset about it.”

The two came to an agreement for Kaepernick to not sit down during the anthem:

“We came to compromise about him taking a knee. Kaepernick also asked me to take a knee. But I put my hand over my heart and sing the words, that’s what I do, so I declined.

Yet, I said I would stand beside him to show America that he was and is willing to listen.”

He explained what it was like to stand next to Kaepernick on the field during the anthem:

“I was hoping he would stand up. But you know what I thought, this is a perfect snapshot of America.

Right now, we are very divided. But the fact that we were willing to be side-by-side in the moment and have that conversation, that’s the first step to actually getting somewhere.”

Boyer added, “Do I agree with the gesture, no. What I do support, however, is his willingness to compromise about something he’s clearly passionate about by agreeing to take a knee. That gesture, among all the negative publicity and backlash he’s received, shows that he’s open to finding solutions, instead of trying to stoke more fires and national outrage.”

11 Redacted Parts of Damning FBI Report on Hillary Clinton That are Making Americans Go ‘Hmmm’…

It’s Friday, it’s Labor Day weekend, and in D.C. that means the release of damning reports the American public is likely to forget after a few sun-soaked days of chowing down on brats and swigging lagers.

But with Hillary Clinton’s approval ratings dropping faster than Colin Kaepernick after seeing the American flag, the release of a FBI report and interview notes, both highly redacted, are certainly not going to help the presidential candidate.

The following are 11 highly redacted sections of the FBI report on Hillary Clinton that are making people curious about what more there is to the presidential hopeful’s story.

1. The First Page

2. ‘Technically Probably Classified’

3. A Potential Hacker

4. Outside the U.S.

5. About Her Blackberry

6. Sorry, 13 Burnberries Blackberries

7. Drones

8. Hillary Clinton’s Birthday

Father of Son Killed by Illegal Immigrant on What Donald Trump Got Right in His Immigration Speech

The man who has been the face of the criminal illegal immigration issue in the Donald Trump campaign has been noticeably absent from recent campaign-related activities surrounding immigration policy.

Jamiel Shaw, whose son was murdered by a criminal illegal immigrant in 2008, was a featured speaker at the GOP convention:

He’s been on the stump with Trump:

He traveled with the presidential contender:

But, though Trump name-checked him during the speech, Shaw was conspicuously absent from the presidential candidate’s big immigration speech this past week in Arizona:

Shaw told Independent Journal Review that he purposely wanted to see what Trump would propose after all the discussion in the media about the presidential contender “softening” his position on illegal immigration:

“It was a very important place to be, but I have to make a stand. I was holding off to see what he was going to do. I wasn’t endorsing anything up front.”

Members of a group called ‘Angel Moms (and Dads)’ were on stage with Trump. We asked why Shaw wasn’t there to stand with the other parents of children who had been killed by illegal immigrants:

“I’m not an ‘Angel Mom,’ I’m not in that organization and I didn’t want to be labeled as such. I wanted to separate from it. I’m not wearing the t-shirt.

We started with the ‘Remembrance Project’ [from which it spun off] but I didn’t like where it was going. I know how this stuff works. Emote and do nothing.”

He told Independent Journal Review that, of course, he empathizes with and has high regard for those parents on stage with Mr. Trump:

“I knew everybody on the stage and they’re good parents.”

But, as he put it on Twitter, he’s been a “Pissed Off Dad since 2008” — well before the group started.

He told us that the components of his son’s case are different from those of many of the ‘Angel Moms.’

Shaw’s case comprises a variety of laws that were broken: the murderer’s early release from prison, the fact that he was a known gang member, that he was illegally in the country, as well as the fact that he was a felon with a gun.

The day the murderer got out of jail (in 2008), he was told to kill a black person as part of a gang ritual. Jamiel Shaw II, known as “Jas,” was his victim. He was shot in cold blood on an LA street:

Shaw says Trump’s proposals to enforce current laws are basically what he calls “Jamiel’s Law,” including putting an end to sanctuary cities and requiring the deportation of criminal illegal immigrants:

“I can roll with it. I’ve been trying to get the same thing. Deport criminal aliens and some people will self-deport when they find out the law will be enforced. Then it’s your fault if you’re still illegally here and enforcement happens.”

Shaw says he remains a big fan of Trump’s:

He told Independent Journal Review: “I didn’t go to Harvard, but I’m not crazy. I’m an expert on this issue.” He added that “we can do so much work on this issue,” such as E-verify and the 287-g program.

As he put it, “Trump is going to do stuff FIRST. Nobody else has done that.”
