Nintendo Swings positive Thanks to Switch Console

Japanese video game giant Nintendo returned to the black for the quarter ended in June thanks to the success of its new Switch console.

Nintendo recorded an operating profit of $144.95 million (5.13 billion yen) for its fiscal first quarter, compared with a year-ago loss of 24.5 billion yen. Revenue jumped 150 percent to $1.37 billion (154.07 billion yen), the company said Wednesday.

The Kyoto-based company sold 1.97 million Switch consoles in the quarter, taking its total sales to 4.7 million units. Nintendo has been unable to keep up with demand for the hybrid home-portable console, and stores in Japan have been operating lotteries for customers to get the chance to purchase one.

The success of the console, along with that of mobile game Pokemon Go, have helped push Nintendo’s stock price up 60 percent over the last year. Its market value exceeded that of Sony Corp. last month. However, Sony stock has also been on a tear — the company has more recently pushed its market capitalization to around $51 billion, compared with $45 billion for Nintendo.

Nintendo is forecasting sales of 10 million Switch consoles for the full fiscal year to March 2018 and operating profit of 65 billion yen ($580 million at current rates).

The company was late to move into mobile gaming, but revenue from titles including Super Mario Run, along with IP licensing, rose 450 percent to $80 million (9 billion yen) for the latest quarter.

Nintendo’s stock closed up 1.3 percent at 35,770 yen ($320) in Tokyo before the earnings announcement.

While Obama Was Speaking at the DNC, What Was Happening Outside Was Far More Explosive

While President Obama gave a sunshine and roses speech at the DNC tonight, let’s just say that what happened outside wasn’t quite so pretty.

The president said his party had helped put the American Dream within reach for more Americans, promising an even brighter future if people vote for Hillary.

Obama even promised that no wall could contain that dream:

“Hillary knows we can insist on a lawful and orderly immigration system while still seeing striving students and their toiling parents as loving families, not criminals or rapists; families that came here for the same reasons our forebears came – to work, and study, and make a better life, in a place where we can talk and worship and love as we please. She knows their dream is quintessentially American, and the American Dream is something no wall will ever contain.”

Meanwhile, outside the DNC, the gate had been breached:

Angry liberals were burning flags:

One even set herself on fire trying to put out the flames:

The chaos even took a violent turn:

And a racial turn:

Their message? We’re here for the revolution:

Hmm….

8 Quotes at DNC Tonight Show Democrats Really, Really, Really Want to Disarm Law-Abiding Gun Owners

On Wednesday evening, the Democratic National Committee lined up a number of emotionally charged speeches to promote the party’s position on gun legislation. They included the victims of gun violence, survivors of gun violence, and those who lost loved ones to gun violence.

1. First came director Lee Daniels (“Precious”), whose father was a police officer who was shot and killed right there in Philadelphia:

2. He introduced Christine Leinonen, whose son Christopher “Drew” Leinonen and his boyfriend were killed at the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando:

3. Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy took the stage next, recalling his experience following the shooting in Sandy Hook:

4. Murphy introduced Erica Smegielski, whose mother was the school principal who was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School:

5. Former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey followed her, noting that “we need more than grieving to protect law enforcement officers”:

6. Actress Angela Bassett spoke about the shooting in Charleston, and how Americans rallied against hate to take down the Confederate flag:

7. Astronaut Mark Kelly – whose wife, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot by Jared Loughner in Tucson, AZ – spoke next:

8. He was followed immediately by his wife, who has undergone intensive speech therapy since she was shot in the head:

9. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrapped up the gun control push with an attempt to rally the independent voters:

“I understand their dilemma. I know what it’s like to have neither party represent my views and values.

Many Republicans blame immigrants for problems, and they stand in the way of action on climate change and gun violence.”

Gun violence was also a theme on Tuesday evening, when featured speakers included the “Mothers of the Movement” – the mothers of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and others.
