Expert Suggests Women Shouldn’t Wear an Engagement Ring on Interviews If They Want the Job

Conventional wisdom about how to land a job seems to be shifting — and some new advice from an executive recruiter is turning heads.

The counsel? Lose the engagement ring for interviews.

In a post for the job recruitment site LinkedIn, executive recruiter and career counselor Bruce Hurwitz discusses a female client who was having difficulty landing a job, and she didn’t know why.

Her interviewing skills and presentation were fine.

The problem, Hurwitz maintains, was actually that the woman had an engagement ring the size of “the Hope Diamond.”

Hurwitz argues that a ring can be a disadvantage for two major reasons:

“When a man sees that ring he immediately assumes you are high maintenance. When the woman at the office who has the largest diamond on her finger, sees that ring, she will realize that if you are hired she will fall to second place and will, therefore, not like you. Lose the ring!”

The woman apparently called Hurwitz two weeks later to thank him directly. She’d secured a job after all, and the only thing she’d done differently was not wear her shiny rock.

Unfortunately, marital status bias in job recruiting scenarios is nothing new. A recent Stanford study found:

Three studies documented effects of marital status on perceptions of employees or prospective employees. In Experiment 1, participants rated a married female job applicant as less suitable for employment than a single counterpart.

In Experiment 2, participants again perceived a female job applicant less favorably when she was married; in contrast, a male applicant was perceived more favorably when married.

In Experiment 3, participants predicted that a recently married woman’s job performance and dedication would decline, whereas a recently married man’s dedication was predicted to rise; this difference made participants more willing to lay off the woman than the man.

Hurwitz goes on to argue that not wearing a ring and refraining from mentioning your pending nuptials isn’t lying:

“Not telling an employer that you plan to get married is fine. It is none of her business. It would only be relevant if, let’s say, you needed some time off in the not too distant future.”

Hurwitz’s advice has rendered some serious online blowback, with many calling it sexist:

The now-controversial job recruiter has this response to all the online criticism he’s received:

Whether or not you find Hurwitz’s advice wrong, or even offensive, it does beg the question: do employers notice more personal things like engagement rings, and does it affect hiring practices?

ajax_url = “http://bit.ly/2bzwBry;;

Do you find this advice helpful?

No, quite frankly I find it sexist.

Yes, he makes a very astute point.

Even America’s Immigrants Are Getting Worried About the Record Number of Migrants Worldwide

A new survey reveals nearly half of people worldwide are troubled by today’s record immigration and migration levels, which are higher than any time following World War II.

According to a survey of more than 16,000 people in 22 countries released by the Ipsos Polling Institute, 49% said there are “too many immigrants” and 46% agreed “immigration is causing their country to change in ways they don’t like.”

People in the United States and the countries dealing with the migrant crisis into Europe tended to be particularly concerned.

The Japanese were the least likely to say there are too many immigrants (only 12% agreed) and residents of Brazil were least likely to criticize immigration’s impact on their country (only 23% did so.)

A record 1.3 million migrants applied in 2015 for asylum in Europe, according to a Pew Research Center analysis.

While migrants from Eastern European countries contribute to the total applicants, about half of the total consists of migrants from just three countries: Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Pew says that Germany is the migrants’ target. That country received 442,000 asylum applications in 2015 alone, but the migrants also settle in other European countries along the way.

Perhaps contributing to the anxiety which local European residents feel about immigration, 73% of asylum seekers were men and 53% were young adults, aged 18 to 34. That means greater than four in ten asylum seekers in Europe in 2015, 42%, were young men aged 18 to 34.

For some countries, the demographics are even starker. In Italy, which is a route for migration into Europe from North Africa, 74% of first-time asylum applicants are young adult men:

The new Ipsos survey also found that majorities in most countries, six in ten respondents overall, believe terrorists are pretending to be refugees seeking asylum:

Such fears about the susceptibility of migrants to terror are justified. The domestic intelligence service in Germany knows of at least 340 instances of Islamic extremists entering refugee centers in search of recruits.

The suicide bomber who targeted France’s national sports stadium in Paris last November had a fake Syrian passport and posed as a refugee to enter Europe via Greece.

While an ocean separates the United States from the immediate consequences of North African and Middle Eastern migration, both that crisis and immigration from below our country’s southern border is in the public spotlight.

Days ago, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump introduced his plan for “extreme vetting” of incoming immigrants, including a temporary ban on immigration from high-risk countries and an ideological test to root out potential terrorists.

In response to his remarks, a Morning Consult poll found that 62% registered voters support his idea for a screening test, including 61% of “immigrants, or children or grandchildren of immigrants,” already in the United States:

In a separate question, the Morning Consult found that 43% of all registered voters support “building a wall on the border between the U.S. and Mexico” and 43% oppose. Among immigrants, 43% also support building a wall, but 50% are opposed.

The current migration and movement of people is unprecedented in the modern era.

It remains to be seen if such mass immigration will lead to changes in law and culture or culminate in integration, but as great as today’s tensions appear, the risks to come may be even greater.

Texas Files Suit to Stop Obamacare from Forcing Doctors to Perform Sex Changes

Fresh off its temporary victory against the Obama administration’s bathroom guidelines for public schools and transgender students, Texas announced Tuesday it is challenging the federal government on another transgender issue — sex-reassignment surgery.

On May 13th of this year, the same day the Obama administration issued its policy that requires public schools to allow students to use the bathroom corresponding with one’s gender identity rather than biological sex, the government also finalized its Obamacare regulations for transgender patients.

Under regulations implemented by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), physicians cannot deny transgender patients hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery even if the health care provider has a religious or conscientious objection to the procedures.

HHS’s rule applies to any health care provider or program that accepts federal dollars, including Medicaid and Medicare. The rule does not explicitly cover sex-reassignment surgery, but insurers could be challenged for denying the procedure to transgender patients.

In a statement released by his office, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said:

“The federal government has no right to force Texans to pay for medical procedures designed to change a person’s sex.”

“I am disappointed in the Obama Administration’s lack of consideration for medical professionals who believe that engaging in such procedures or treatment violates their Hippocratic Oath, their conscience, or their personal religious beliefs, which are protected by the Constitution and federal law.”

Texas is suing on behalf of the religious hospital network Franciscan Alliance and four other states are joining in the suit.

Paxton’s case against the Obama administration has been assigned to the same federal judge who late Sunday temporarily blocked the Education Department from enforcing its transgender bathroom policy, Judge Reed O’Connor.

School districts have the option to voluntarily implement the guidelines but the policy is no longer tied to federal education funding.

The Justice Department is expected to appeal the ruling, leaving a number of President Obama’s policies at risk and under debate as the end of his presidency nears.

Media Just Can’t Wait to Pigeonhole ‘Ugly American’ Ryan Lochte as a Trump Supporter

Despite the number of credible sources who have come forward to corroborate most of the Rio gas station robbery story told by Ryan Lochte, the damage may already be done. He has already lost several sponsors and most of his credibility.

If he never returns to competition, he will have “retired in shame,” and if he does, he will re-enter the international stage with a cloud over his accomplishments.

And although the Olympian apologized for his unacceptable behavior, others were quick to paint him as the poster boy for ‘ugly American’ behavior:

They even left notes in Rio, apologizing on his behalf:

Some — including several media outlets — cited Lochte’s behavior in an effort to tie him to brash Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Cynthia Dill queried in the Portland Press Herald:

“How much do you want to bet that Ryan Lochte is a Donald Trump supporter? He’s got the hair for it, right? Lochte’s blue locks with Trump’s red pelt and the white hair of Roger Ailes will look so beautiful on stage at the Mar-A-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, with hundreds of foreign workers slaving away in the background.

And is it me, or does shirtless Lochte in the pool resemble shirtless Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, Trump’s idol, on a horse? But it’s not just Lochte’s appearance that suggests he might soon be another white face of the Trump campaign; it’s his winning attitude.

So Lochte said on the world stage he was a victim of armed robbery when really he got caught drunk vandalizing private property and urinating in public. He won the gold medal, didn’t he?”

The Associated Press used their similarly-timed apologies — Lochte for his behavior and Trump for his comments — to draw a comparison between the two. And it wasn’t alone:

And some cited…other similarities:

Some suggested that they ought to work together:

Or that, at the very least, Lochte was going to vote for Trump:

But an interview with The Wall Street Journal from a 2012 Fashion Week party suggests that Lochte likely leans left, politically speaking. When asked after the London Olympics what he thought about the upcoming (2012) Presidential election, he responded:

“I’ve been going non-stop left and right. I haven’t had time to watch the news. I’ve got to catch up on that. But, you know, Obama did great the past four years, so I’m kind of more leaning towards him.”

Lochte concluded his comments with his trademarked word: “Jeah.”

Homeless Woman Tried for Decades to Prove Feds Owed Her $100,000. They Finally Listened…

80-year-old Wanda Witter has been in a decades-long fight to prove that the federal government owes her $100,000.

During the struggle, she became homeless and found herself living on the streets. Still, she pressed on, despite everyone in her life suggesting that her claim had no merit.

Witter claimed that the Social Security Administration owed her the money after a series of snafus that began when Witter worked as a machinist, making turbine and engine parts.

She moved around a lot and held many different jobs — and the government couldn’t keep up. They began sending her checks to incorrect addresses and drawing them up in incorrect amounts.

Witter refused to cash these checks, but kept record of their amounts versus the amount she was owed.

Eventually, she actually moved to Washington, D.C., to be, in her words, “where all the lawyers were supposed to be.”

She would call the toll-free line and argue with representatives from the Social Security office.

She sent letters and tried, in vain, to get someone to actually listen to her.

Her daughters came to rescue her from homelessness, but she refused to leave until the government actually took her seriously.

Nobody believed her, despite the fact that she carried all of the pertinent paperwork with her at all times, in a series of suitcases.

Wanda Witter spoke to The Washington Post about her lengthy ordeal to make the government admit to their error:

“They kept thinking I was crazy, telling me to get rid of the suitcases,” she said.

“I wasn’t going anywhere without the money they owe me.”

“I knew, when I committed to homelessness, I had to be very careful about what I did. ‘Don’t do anything stupid,’ I told myself.

Because they’ll think I’m a mental case.”

Finally, after years of living on the street, Witter found a sympathetic ear.

Social worker Julie Turner began working on her behalf, contacting the Social Security office in order to ascertain whether or not the government truly owed the woman $100,000.

Turner marveled at just how organized Witter was. Her paperwork was pristine.

As it turns out, the government did indeed owe her that lofty sum of money:

“She had all the paperwork there, neatly organized, in order. She was right all along.

They did owe her all that money.”

Now, the actual amount owed to Witter may actually stretch out to more than $100,000. The paperwork has to be officially sorted through and, at that point, an actual amount will be announced.

Meanwhile, Witter is feeling vindicated:

“They kept sending me to mental counselors.

I wasn’t crazy. I wasn’t mentally ill.”

While she was waiting for the full amount, Witter received a check for $1,464 to hold her over.

It was enough to get her off of the streets. She got a small apartment for $500 a month.

According to her attorney, in a couple more days, she’ll be able to cash a $99,999 check, though.

A spokeswoman for the Social Security Administration has declined to comment on the case.

‘Walmart Workout’ Dad Breaks Down Talking About How His 300-lb Weight Loss Has Affected His Son

Pasquale “Pat” Brocco used to be known as “Fat Pat.” Not anymore, though.

Good Morning America” reports that three years ago, the 605-pound Arizona man had a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting with his doctor and found out that if he didn’t drop weight, he’d develop diabetes and heart disease. Dying prematurely was a real possibility.

Here’s what he looked like then:

So, Pat took the talk to heart.

Brocco threw out all of his unhealthy food and forced himself to walk to the local Walmart to buy healthy stuff. He did it for every meal — three times a day. Between that six mile trek each day and eating more healthfully, he lost 200 pounds.

And Brocco went from being “Fat Pat” to “Possible Pat”:

Yes I’m the Same man just a different outlook on life! I found what’s really important and that’s my health, I realized our health is our wealth! You want something bad enough you work your ass off to get it! It’s all about staying focused, never quitting, finding what motivates you, being dedicated and stay consistent on chasing your dreams. You do that until your dreams or no longer dreams they become reality! Never forget why or who your doing it for! Yes Indeed it is possible and never forget that!! On the left I was 605lbs over 53% bodyfat on my death bed with high blood pressure, pre diabetic and morbidly obese, on the right I’m 275lbs 10% BF and disease free! #transformationtuesday #nevergiveup #dedication #focus #workharder #weightloss #instafit #fitness #fitnessmotivation #fatlose #losingweight #gymlife #gymrat #gains #gymmotivation #beast #beastmode #fitnessfreak #teamlove @bigjeffheezy @indeed_iam

Once Pat was small enough to fit on the equipment, he hit the gym and lost even more weight. Look at that transformation:

I lost 330lbs without getting surgery just staying focus eating clean and working my ass off! It’s a process that won’t happen overnight but it can very well happen! This is progress over two years! sorry I don’t have a picture of my back from when I first started three years ago just know it was almost 150lbs heavier then the top left picture! Here’s a tip tho! First we have to start in our minds (meaning) we have to want to change and not just talk about it, really wanting it! We have to be willing to make sacrifices, willing to work hard, willing to do whatever it takes! It’s not just wanting to change we have to believe we can change, if anyone is going to believe in you start with yourself, don’t let your mind think anything else, don’t let your mind set limiting for you! We must do what’s necessary and what’s possible, stay consistent and never lose focus even if we fail just keep going and suddenly one day we’ll look up and were doing the impossible! There are no limitations we only set them in our minds, we can become who and what we want! This isn’t just a fitness post it can be applied to life! #motivation #motivationmonday #weightlossjourney #weightloss #weightlossmotivation #fat #fitness #fitnessmotivation #fitnessfreak #fitnessjourney #focus #gymmotivation #gymrat #gymlife #nodaysoff #limitless #followyourdreams #focus #fitfam #bigback #backday #bodybuilding #bodytransformation

He became a ‘beast’ at the gym and has lost more than 300 pounds:

Four things Hard Work, Dedication, Consistency, Belief! You must first believe it can be done. Then you must work hard to make it happen. You must stay dedicated, and even if you fail stay consistent! Failure is part of success, Not trying or quitting isn’t and will never get you any closer to your goals or dreams! It took me 3 years to reach my goals in that journey I failed multiple times! The only reason I reached my goals is because I never gave up, I stood consistent, I was dedicated, and most importantly I believed it was possible!! #stillinit #weightlossjourney #weightloss #goals #dedication #consistency #inspired #workharder #hardwork #focus #dreams #fatloss #transformation #bodybuilding #bodytransformation #instafit #gymlife #fitnessmotivation #fitnessjourney

GMA reports that this is what Rocco’s 605-pound self used to eat every day:

Box of cereal
1/2 gallon whole milk
1 package peanut butter cups
1 candy bar
12-inch meatball and cheese submarine sandwich
100 fast food chicken nuggets
1 fast food apple pie
1 fast food milkshake
2 liters soda
4 doughnuts

Now he’s lean and clean:

He says he continues his journey because of his namesake:

That face is enough to motivate him to stay in line:

Rocco just underwent surgery to remove 30 pounds of excess skin from his body.

As he puts it, it’s all about dedication: “The only reason I reached my goals is because I never gave up, I stood consistent, I was dedicated, and most importantly I believed it was possible!!”

Courtney Stodden Cradles ‘Reborn Doll’ One Month After Losing Her Baby by Miscarriage

Reality star Courtney Stodden has spent her entire adult life in the public eye, after marrying a man nearly 40 years older than her at the ripened age of 16.

But there are some moments she would surely like to keep under wraps, like the heartbreaking miscarriage of her first child just 12 weeks into her pregnancy.

A rep for the reality star told Entertainment Tonight last month:

“It is with a heavy heart to inform you that last week Courtney Stodden suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage. Courtney and her husband, Doug, are at an emotional loss for words and are using this time to grieve with their close family and friends. Please respect their privacy as the couple try to cope with losing their precious baby and seek the support they both need.”

In the age of social media, it seems that expressing her sadness is a way of coping. Stodden has had an understandably difficult time, telling fans she turned to alcohol to numb the pain, and later shaving her head to symbolize the “new chapter” in her life.

New chapter

A photo posted by Courtney A Stodden (@courtneyastodden) on Aug 8, 2016 at 12:03am PDT

But a few weeks later, Stodden is trying something else to help with the loss of her baby boy — ordering a doll resembling her little one, better known as a “reborn doll.”

In an Instagram video posted Wednesday, Stodden is visibly excited as she opens her long awaited package:

“Just received my reborn baby today! exciting ???? I know it may seem a little strange but my therapist suggested that having him may help me cope with my loss. #rebornbaby.”

Reborn dolls are made to look just like a human infant as much as possible, reflecting what their hair, skin, eyes and body really looked like.

According to the Daily Mail:

“The dolls are created from a kit composed of the limbs and head made from vinyl and a trunk made from fabric which are painted several times to create the skin tone of newborn babies. They are then fitted with natural-looking hair and eyelashes.”

Some psychiatrists, like Gail Saltz, think it’s completely healthy for grieving moms to have their own reborn dolls. In a 2008 interview with TODAY, he said:

“It’s natural for people to find ways of preserving memories of those they love — from making photo albums, to visiting gravesites to keeping an urn of ashes on the mantel.

Everyone tries to vanquish death and the ravages of time.

[These dolls provide] moments of relief and reprieve, when they can escape the stark reality of their loss, and instead have those familiar feelings of coddling a baby, cooing over it, and all those other nice moments that temporarily undo the harsh reality.”

#rebornbaby

A photo posted by Courtney A Stodden (@courtneyastodden) on Aug 24, 2016 at 7:09pm PDT

Stodden even filled out a birth certificate, which came with the doll, but left his name and date of birth blank.

Birth cert???????????? #rebornbaby

A photo posted by Courtney A Stodden (@courtneyastodden) on Aug 24, 2016 at 6:54pm PDT

The dolls look so real that people have a hard time telling them apart from real-life babies.

Just last week, a New Hampshire police officer broke into a locked car after receiving a call there was a “baby” roasting inside.

Lieutenant Jason Short performed CPR on the doll before realizing it wasn’t real. He told WMUR News:

“I went to put my finger in its mouth and it was all resistance. And I’m like, ‘This is a doll.’”

Reborn dolls are typically sold on Ebay, Etsy and other websites.

Stodden seems very pleased with her little one, calling him “beautiful” and “amazing.”
