Study Confirms What Wives Arguing With Their Husbands Have Known All Along

Whether you’re having it out over the dinner table or making your case in a high-level academic paper, there’s one very important way of building your argument … the appeal to authority. And it seems that men in particular are prone to seeing themselves as the best authority of all.

As the Washington Post reports, a new study of self-citations in academia has found proof of something suspected by generations of annoyed wives: men are significantly more likely to cite themselves as experts in any given argument.

The study, conducted by two women and three men from Stanford University, NYU, and University of Washington, looked at the 1.5 million research papers published between 1779 and 2011 and available in the JSTOR database. The researchers found that 10% of the citations in the average academic paper were self-citations. In other words, the author of the paper cited his or her own previous work.

As the Post explains, citing yourself is not necessarily a problem–pioneers in a particular field of study might find that they’re one of the only people available to cite on the subject. However, the number of article citations you have as a researcher or academic is also an indication of your impact on your field. This can lead to people “juicing” their citation count by citing themselves in their own work.

As the authors of the study learned, men are significantly more likely to self-cite. In all the papers studied, from 1779 to 2011, men cited themselves 56% more often than women. And rather than lessening as more women enter the workforce, the problem has gotten worse. When they looked at just the last two decades of papers, the researchers found that men self-cite 70% more often than women. In contrast, women were 10% more likely not to cite themselves at all.

The gender gap in citations was unaffected by subject matter. Even in the research paper documenting the gap, the authors noted that the male authors cited themselves three times as often as their female counterparts.

Unfortunately, there’s a real world impact from women’s comparative modesty in self-citing (or men’s lack thereof). Because citation count contributes to your standing in the field–and because researchers are more willing to cite someone who already has lots of citations to their name–women may be hampering their own careers by refusing to self-cite.

Though, as any irritated wife would say, men could help out by not being so quick to highlight their own expertise on everything.

Sarah Palin Releases a Bikini Video and There’s a Surprising Response

Former Governor Sarah Palin is a running fanatic and fitness buff. She’s had five kids and, perhaps if she were anyone else, the personality press might be touting her amazing over-50 body after she revealed a video of her in a bikini.

But she’s firebrand Sarah Palin. So, when she shared this video of her in a bikini on her Facebook page, she got a little snark.

Mediaite wondered why “no one noticed” the video:

“Now, former future Vice President and current former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin can’t even get noticed taking a cool summer plunge in a bikini.

It has yet to crack six figures on Facebook.”

It’s true that the more than 82,000 views of her jumping into a pool don’t measure up to the number of people who watch her political videos:

Her happy birthday wishes to evangelist Billy Graham were seen by more than 740,000 people. Her video about Ronald Reagan received more than 180,000 views. A video about global warming was seen by nearly a half a million people.

After her 2008 star turn as vice presidential running mate of John McCain, Palin’s social media stock was even bigger. But now Palin is being chided for 82,000 views of bikini video.

Maybe her popularity is waning, or maybe people just like her for her brains.

When Child Asks to Be Treated Like Adult, Mom & Dad Call His Bluff & Give Him Exactly What He Wants

The irony of childhood is that you only really appreciate it when you’re an adult … except in the case of one eleven-year-old who learned that lesson the hard way.

As blogger/author Jen Hatmaker writes on Facebook, she recently had her own troubles with a child who was demanding “grown-up” treatment, much to his parents’ annoyance:

“Had a “difficult” day yesterday with a kid who wants to be “treated like an adult” (but without all/any of the responsibilities),” she writes. “This child risked his own life by telling Brandon and I when we can and cannot speak to him, and I prayed to Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit and all the heavenly beings to be a hedge of protection around him lest I end his earthly journey.”

As she shared the story with a group of friends, she found that she was not alone. In fact, a friend shared her own story of how she and her husband called their son’s bluff in a way he’ll never forget.

It was a case of yet another pre-teen boy who was looking for some adult-level privileges:

“Apparently her 11-year-old also wanted to be a grown up this week and, in fact, not only did he treat his siblings like despised underlings, but when asked what he wanted, he said: ‘I want the authority to be in charge of them and tell them what to do, because they deserve it!’”

As Hatmaker notes, these parents provided their son with a great lesson by giving him exactly what he wanted:

“Well. My girlfriend and her husband are NOT AT ALL MESSING AROUND with parenting. Calmly, evenly, they granted his request to be a grown-up for a week by pulling him out of camp (the underlings still got to go, because they are “such children”) and sending him to work ALL DAY EVERY DAY with his dad. He has to get up early and shower and make breakfast for everyone. He has to kiss the underlings before he goes to work and tell them to have a great day and that he loves them. He has to work on a typing project during his office hours. He only gets to eat what his dad eats, because eating like a grown-up is not nearly as fun as eating like a kid.”

In other words, writes Hatmaker, “Want to be an adult? Fine.”

It was a great reminder about the balance between compassion and tough love parenting. And Hatmaker says she found it inspirational:

“I cannot tell you how much this story brought me joy. There is definitely a time in parenting to respond with grace and second-chances and tenderness. And sometimes there is a time to CALL YOUR KID’S BLUFF and send him to an office job for 40 hours a week instead of camp,” she writes. “RESPECT.”

The story struck a nerve, as more women in the group chimed in with their own stories of how their own parents had “called their bluff:”

“Our other girlfriend piped in with how her mom would leave her and her brother at the store if they wandered off LIKE SHE TOLD THEM NOT TO, and they had to wait outside at the curb in the Houston sun until she decided to come back for them. (She was basically hiding in the corner of the parking lot watching, but still.)”

It’s probably no coincidence that some of these lessons came during the notoriously difficult teen years:

“Our other girlfriend told us how she yelled at her dad for being 15 minutes late to pick her up from her internship once at the capitol when she was 18, and he calmly said, “You are so right. That was an inconvenience for you. You should not have to wait for me as I leave my job early to pick you up in downtown traffic. So now you will ride the public bus home for the remainder of your internship and you will never have to wait for me again.” Wailing, she rode the city bus home for the next month even though her dad beat her home every day,” Hatfield recounts. “I died.”

And the stories didn’t just resonate with that particular group. Hatfield asked readers to share their own experiences with no nonsense parenting and received some hilarious responses.

One commenter remembers the genius way her own mother had dealt with the snarky teenage years:

Another woman remembers her mom’s great way of stopping a teenage penchant for drama:

The thousands of shares and comments on Hatmaker’s post demonstrate that there are few things parents (and children) remember so well as the life lessons passed on through a bit of call-their-bluff parenting. Not only does the tough love drive the point home, it also makes for some truly funny stories.

The Reason Millennials Are Not Having Sex Is Pretty Darn Depressing

Millennials, people typically between 18 and 34, are having less sex than the two previous generations in America, and it’s not for reasons that you might expect, or hope.

The Washington Post recently published an article that explores this notable gap between the generations and digging into the reasons why they aren’t having as much sex.

It turns out, millennials aren’t waiting for that “special someone,” and most of them aren’t practicing abstinence for religious reasons either.

A 26-year-old financial analyst in Chicago named Sam Wei told WaPo that she hasn’t had sex in 18 months:

“To me, there’s more intimacy with having someone there next to you that you can rely on without having to have sex. I don’t want to do anything that would harm the relationship and be something that we can’t come back from.”

“Intellectual conversation is more stimulating and more pleasurable than having sex sometimes. . . . I’m just kind of more of a rational person. I like to make sure it makes sense before I dive into it.”

The “me” generation has often been described as self-centered, narcissistic, and sometimes wasteful by not only other generations, but also themselves — according to a Pew Research poll.

And this seems supported by other testimonies gathered by WaPo. Another woman, 19-year-old Alexandra Wolff, has been too busy to even think about going out and having sex:

“It’s not like I’m saving myself for anything; it’s more like I’ve been busy.”

An 18-year-old man named Noah Patterson would rather do things he enjoys than go on dates and try to woo women:

“For an average date, you’re going to spend at least two hours, and in that two hours I won’t be doing something I enjoy.”

“I’d rather be watching YouTube videos and making money.”

new report shows that 15% percent of 20- 24-year-olds have not had sex since turning 18. This is a 6% increase from the early 1990s.

Another study last year that millennials are more accepting of casual sex, but they reported fewer sexual partners than any generation since the Baby Boomers.

They average eight partners, as opposed to the Baby Boomers’ 11 and Gen X’s 10.

Norman Spack, associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, blames technology:

“The nature of communication now is anti-sexual. People are not spending enough time alone just together. There’s another gorilla in the room: It’s whatever is turned on electronically.”

Comments online seem to agree with the WaPo’s angle:

It appears that millennials are just too distracted, stressed, or busy to dedicate the time it takes to develop a sexual relationship with another human being… and that is a little depressing.

Trump’s Former Campaign Mgr. Responds to Tax Return Demands by Bringing Up Obama’s Missing Documents

CNN contributor Corey Lewandowski used to be Donald Trump’s campaign manager.

Tuesday night on CNN, he showed America what that means, dredging up a request on President Obama’s college transcripts and asking whether he got into Harvard as a U.S. citizen.

Let’s just say two other people on the CNN panel were pissed at him for bringing it up, and the discussion got heated in a hurry, with one panelist telling Lewandowski:

“I’m going to Beyonce you: Boy, bye.”

Watch it above.

4 States Will Make or Break Donald Trump’s Attempt to ‘Make America Great Again’

There are less than 100 days left until the presidential election, and if Donald Trump wants to win the election, he’s going to need to win some key swing states.

And while Trump’s campaign is far from traditional, he’s going to have to do it with limited resources.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign currently has more than double the cash of Donald Trump’s. The Democrat candidate currently holds $44 million cash-on-hand, while Trump retains $20 million.

Since both candidates have nabbed their respective nominations, Trump’s cash-on-hand has seen a significant increase. A bare bones operation paired with increased fundraising efforts have yielded them millions. Two months ago, the Trump campaign had $1.29 million.

Despite the increase in funding and boost in the polls following the Republican National Convention…

…polling averages over the past six months suggest that Trump continues to remain vulnerable to defeat.

The New York Times reports that, for Trump, fundraising has increased and polling numbers have narrowed significantly. That doesn’t mean he can lose focus on snagging the “trifecta” of important states this coming November: Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Here’s where the Trump campaign plans to focus:

Florida

The Sunshine State will be a main focus for the Trump campaign. During the GOP primary, Trump snagged all of Florida’s delegates, beating out native son Marco Rubio.

Clinton supporter and Virginia Governor, Terry McCauliffe (D), told the New York Times that if Clinton can prevail in Virginia, she may just need one additional swing state to win. McCauliffe suggested that Florida would be the easiest path to the presidency.

As of June 30th, 4.4 million Republicans and 4.6 million Democrats had been registered to vote in Florida. At the same time, Trump maintains a narrow lead of 0.3% in the Real Clear Politics polling average.

Ohio

Most political experts will tell you that in order to win the presidency, you will need Ohio most.

The Columbus Dispatch points out the significance of Ohio’s voters:

“No Republican has won the presidency without carrying Ohio since Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860. And only two Democrats in the last century (Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944 and John F. Kennedy in 1960) won the presidency while losing Ohio.”

Trump may find some trouble in Ohio if Governor John Kasich fails to endorse him. Kasich took a majority of delegates from his home state during the GOP primary. He also didn’t attend the GOP’s convention in Cleveland this summer.

At the moment, Ohio is a very tight race, with Clinton up on Trump by just under a percentage point in the Real Clear Politics average of polls.

Pennsylvania

Much like in Ohio, Trump has done well in Pennsylvania, in part because he attempted to appeal to white voters worried about jobs. That’s a key issue when you’re trying to woo the Rustbelt.

However, Pennsylvania going red will be a challenge. The Keystone state hasn’t voted for a Republican since 1988, and Clinton currently leads Trump by five percentage points in the Real Clear Politics average of Pennsylvania polls.

North Carolina

The Times notes that the right-leaning state of North Carolina may be at risk of going purple or blue:

“Trump allies have grown concerned about North Carolina, a Republican-leaning state that has large communities of black voters and college-educated whites — two audiences with which Mr. Trump is deeply unpopular.”

Polling for each of the candidates needs to settle after convention mania (when candidates generally see a boost), before the election battleground picture becomes clearer.

But for the Trump campaign, it’s do or die based on these four states.
