The Bank Street School for Children in Manhattan is reportedly teaching white students that they should feel guilty about their race as early as kindergarten.
In contrast, they teach ‘kids of color’ to be proud of their race. The New York Post reports:
Administrators at the Bank Street School for Children on the Upper West Side claim it’s a novel approach to fighting discrimination, and that several other private New York schools are doing it, but even liberal parents aren’t buying it.
They complain the K-8 school of 430 kids is separating whites in classes where they’re made to feel awful about their “whiteness,” and all the “kids of color” in other rooms where they’re taught to feel proud about their race and are rewarded with treats and other privileges.
Bank Street has created a “dedicated space” in the school for “kids of color,” where they’re “embraced” by minority instructors and encouraged to “voice their feelings” and “share experiences about being a kid of color,” according to school presentation slides obtained by The Post.
Bank Street’s website clarifies what “dedicated space” means:
Bank Street offers Kids of Color (KOC) affinity groups in the Middle and Upper School, which are facilitated by a faculty member of color.
The groups have similar goals: to provide a space where students of color are in a majority setting; to support students of color in the positive development of their racial and ethnic identity; to create an environment where children of color can feel free and comfortable to share their experiences and concerns; and to encourage students of color to develop age appropriate ownership and leadership in the dialogue about racial diversity.
The program is run by Anshu Wahi, the school’s director of Diversity and Community.
According to the Post, Wahi is under the impression that:
White babies display signs of racism, so she encourages parents to talk to their kids about race as early as kindergarten, making them hyperaware of racial differences, and even “examine your own whiteness.”
The school also offers an affinity group for teachers who “identify as white and anti-racist.” Based on Bank Street’s website, the group helps them “learn about and examine white culture and privilege and how it plays out in their lives and teaching.”
