Team USA Wins 1000th Gold Medal: America’s ‘Dominance’ Over 120 Years

Team USA has had a heckuva ride from the 1896 Olympics in Athens to the 2016 games in Rio today.

Over 120 years, America’s Olympic team has provided the country with countless memorable moments.

In the nation’s first Olympics, Team USA took home nine gold medals, seven in track and field, and two in shooting.

Jesse Owens’ historic victory in Berlin in 1936 showed German dictator Adolph Hitler that ‘victory’ knows no color. Owens took home four gold medals for all of America to be proud of.

In 1972, Team USA swimmer Mark Spitz won an astounding seven gold medals at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

In 1981, Team USA hockey’s “Miracle on Ice” sent chills up the spines of Americans with an upset of the Soviet Union.

Mary Lou Retton at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles became ‘America’s Sweetheart’ by winning a gold medal in the individual all-around in gymnastics and took home four other medals.

Since 2000, Michael Phelps has established himself as the greatest Olympian of all-time, accumulating an astounding 23 gold medals from the 2004 Olympics in Barcelona to the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Team USA’s women swimmers took home the 1000th gold medal for the United States, led by Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer, and Simone Manuel in the anchor spot.

Team USA swimmer Katie Ledecky established herself as a legend-in-the-making at the 2016 Rio Olympics: Her four gold medals and world record times have her looking like the future of Olympic swimming.

One hundred and twenty years of thrilling history: Victory, defeat, travail, and triumph. 1000 gold medals is just the beginning.
